Differences between B&B’s, Guesthouses and Hotels

A suggestion from Google Analytics has enlightened us to the fact that a lot of people cannot tell the difference between a Bed & Breakfast, a Guest house and a Hotel. And justifiably so: the terms are not used consistently around the globe, so one cannot draw sharp distinctions.

But we would not be far from the truth by saying that there are three key factors that differentiate these types of lodging:

1. Size

One can safely say that B&B’s and Guest houses are usually smaller than hotels. They can accommodate less people and they offer a limited set of amenities, although some of them are prized by the visitors more than the hotel ones, like a homemade breakfast.

2. Ownership and Employment

B&B’s and Guest houses are mainly family businesses, not employing permanent staff and not offering a reception desk or a concierge. By contrast, hotels are operating around the clock, employing full time staff, with dedicated roles and functions.

3. Law

In several jurisdictions the law treats differently the B&B’s or Guest houses from the hotels, requiring from hotels more strict operating standards and more wide services offered.

While the above may highlight the differences between B&B’s and Guest houses on the one hand, and hotels on the other, they do not explain the difference between B&B’s and Guest houses.
Again, the differences are not clear. Guest houses are kind of larger than B&B’s though, as most of the B&B’s historically originate from family houses that were rented to visitors a as mean to supplement the family income.
B&B’s are therefore more limited in capacity, more ‘homey’ units, than Guest houses. Apart from that the differences are blurred.

B&Bs are also usually in a personal home. The hosts are the owners of the residence and live in the house with the guests.

As the manager of a B&B, I am quite surprised at the lack of knowledge the general public have about the difference between a B&B and guesthouse, some expect the same amenities as what they can expect in a five star hotel, yet others are overwhelmed by the personal service and homely atmosphere they get staying at a B&B. Wish people would know their own preferences before they decide on where to stay!

      Chris van der Schyff,

I don’t know if you noticed, but this page is for ppl looking to find out the difference between B&B’s, Guesthouses & Hotels. Not all places in the world have B&B’s, Guesthouses, Motels (not a spelling error) & Hostels. So a person coming to this page IS looking to find out the difference.

Your response sounds like your quite annoyed that ppl that stay at your B&B – Aviators Retreat B&B, don’t know the differences in your line of business. I can assure you, you don’t know details in my line of business either. But I would never be so rude as to insult by saying the “lack of knowledge the general public” has toward my business. Nor would I comment with an exclamation point that you “wish people would know their own preferences before they decide on where to stay!”

I can assure you my preference is NOT to stay at your B&B. I wouldn’t feel comfortable staying some where, where a question or comment would leave you “quite surprised at (my) the lack of knowledge”.

I would suggest you delete your comment. A mere click on your name took me right to your B&B. Insulting the general public is never a good way to increase business.

The difference bewteen a B&B and guest house is simple. A B&B takes 6 guests and under and is a private house, literally what it says Bed & Breakfast .It is homely but restricted, as a result respect for the owners privacy is appreciated, baring in mind they don;t have staff.
A Guest House takes over 6 guests, is run on a commercial basis, has seperate guest accomodation from the owners living accomadation and may well hace staff to help.
I believe the confusuion comes due to being able to stay anywhere on a “B&B basis”

Had a bad experience recently with a Guest House being advertised as a Hotel with five star price. On arrival a lecture on house rules followed, including nothing drink or food in the rooms, no kettle, to come downstairs if one needs coffee in the morning but only after 7.15am. This in my opinion is deception or being economical with the truth. How can customers be protected from such incidents?

Do boarding homes serve breakfast? If so, what differs them from Bed & Breakfast? Their price? Quality of rooms? Or what?

What makes Bed & Breakfast different from Boarding house? Both serve breakfast, right? Which has more users? Is their difference in quality of rooms, price or what?
